The Adams Varsity Boys Basketball team has had an impressive start to the season, winning the first five games. Most recently, on Tuesday, December 5, the team won an exciting game in the final seconds against Oxford High School.
Those in attendance were privileged to see senior Peter Kardasis win the game with a buzzer-beater shot. The teams were tied at 43 until Kardasis sunk the final shot, securing the win for the Highlanders.
Tensions were high during the game, neither team pulling far ahead of the other. The close competition did not deter the Highlanders, as players worked hard up until that final shot.
“We probably overlooked them a little bit. We thought it was going to be one of our easier games. We didn’t have as much energy as a team, but then later in the game, we came together and came out with a win. So I was happy,” said Kardasis.
Being under the pressure of the buzzer, not many players are capable of such a feat. However, Kardasis pulled off the monumental shot, continuing the team’s streak of wins. It’s safe to say the team’s reaction was nothing short of ecstatic.
“We were all really happy. We didn’t want to lose a game especially early in the season. We’re undefeated right now. We’re happy that we don’t have any losses. We never thought we were gonna lose that game, so we were happy to win,” said Kardasis.
The team’s success in the beginning of the 2023-2024 season can not only be credited to players like Kardasis, but his teammates and coaches. High school sports teams suffer inevitable changes when one season ends and another begins, losing many of their players to college, but it is clear Adams Varsity Boys Basketball are not letting these changes impact their performance this year.
“I’m happy. I still think we can be a little better. We obviously lost Brady [Prieskorn], since he’s leaving early to play football at Michigan… he was a big part of our team. But we have some other people who are stepping up. I’m excited for the rest of the year,” said Kardasis.
Starting the year with an incredible string of games, this year’s Varsity Boys Basketball team is shaping up to have an incredible season.
