Patriots Defense Shines as Offense Underwhelms

The Patriots are on the road to getting back-to-back Super Bowl rings, powered by the outstanding performance from their defense.

The New England Patriots have gotten off to a hot start this year, which is little surprise to any NFL fan. With a win over the Washington Redskins last Sunday (10/07), they have taken sole position of 1st place in the AFC after the Kansas City Chiefs suffered a loss the same day. Despite all the very un-Patriot like drama surrounding Antonio Brown and his following release, the Patriots have kept their heads down and pounded through their opponents, starting 4-0 with no signs of slowing down. To much surprise, however, legendary quarterback Tom Brady has not been his usual dominant self, playing as a normal above average quarterback. The hype of the receiving core was real going into the season with Antonio Brown, Josh Gordon, Julian Edelman leading the way, but they have been underwhelming to this point.

The headliner thus far, though, has been the Patriots defense. The defense has captured the attention of the whole league, stifling opponents at a historic rate. They amazingly did not allow a single touchdown through the first three games, and did not allow a passing touchdown through the first five games. Through this season, they have only allowed a jaw dropping eight points per game: a task that requires a full team of cooperation and not achievable through just a couple of standout individuals. Leading the pack this season has been veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore and the McCourty twins (Jason and Devin), along with new rising star JC Jackson finding his own rhythm as he gets more playing time.

Head coach Bill Belichick watches on as his team continues to succeed.

“The way our defense is playing, as long as we don’t turn the ball over, we know we have a great chance to win because they are playing as well as any defense I have ever played with,” Brady said on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show, reflecting his and the rest of the offense’s full confidence in their counterpart on the other side of the ball.

“Being a defensive player myself, it’s really cool to see a team with such poise and control over a game. I really try to model my playing after seeing what they do on the field” said Adams defensive back Logan Sayre.

Despite being ranked as the league’s top defense by every major news and sports outlet, he maintained his usual humbleness and concentration on football. Belichick, known as the Mastermind of the NFL, has been an integral part of how the Patriots have been able to maintain a winning culture for so long, a result of all of his dedication and long hours spent devoted to the game.
