Brunch is the perfect way to spend Galentine’s Day

“What’s Galentine’s Day, you ask? Oh, it’s only the best day of the year!”  You may recall this quote by character Leslie Knope of the popular television show, “Parks and Recreation”.

Galentine’s Day is celebrated on February 13, the day before Valentine’s Day. On the show, Knope takes her girlfriends out to brunch to exchange gifts and notes expressing her appreciation for the female friends in her life.

“I love that Leslie Knope cherishes her lady friends just as much, if not more, than her boyfriends, ” said junior Nicky Richards. “Her lady friends are the ‘number ones’ in her life and I love that about her!”

Ever since the episode “Galentine’s Day” aired on February 11, 2010, this unofficial holiday has been widely celebrated among women across the country. Without a “significant other”, many singles hate Valentine’s Day, so Galentine’s Day is a fun alternative and provides a chance to appreciate the amazing lady friends in life. Take a cue from Leslie Knope and take your girlfriends out to brunch, go see a movie or just stay at home and bake.

“I hang out with my awesome friend Lauren, and we make cookies and brownies and watch Disney movies all day,” said senior Gabby Solon.

As long as time is spent with gal pals who lift each other up, the holiday is being celebrated the way it is meant to be.

“I stay in and watch [romantic comedies] with my girls,” said senior Nell Brigoli.

For Brigoli, and women everywhere, a day spent this way will lessen the blow of being surrounded by disgustingly adorable couples.

Galentine’s Day only comes once a year, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only day to celebrate wonderful lady friends.
