Highlander’s Most Wanted: Smash Bros Newcomers
What newcomers for “Super Smash Bros Ultimate” will the students at Rochester Adams High School want the most? On March 8, video game development company Nintendo released one of their notorious “Nintendo Directs” in which the company showed off all of their upcoming games releasing in the next few months.
It was only at the very end of the stream when Nintendo revealed that the Inklings, the protagonists of Nintendo’s new IP Splatoon were newcomers for the long awaited Super Smash Bros Five titled Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Due to the Inklings being relatively new characters, it opened the doors for nearly any character to be added. Naturally, fans went wild with speculation on which of their favorite characters would be playable. Currently the most likely characters are: Shadow from Sonic the Hedgehog, Bandanna Dee from Kirby, Banjo and Kazooie from Banjo and Kazooie, Geno from Super Mario RPG, Incineroar, from Pokemon, and Skull Kid from Majora’s Mask.
At #3, is Bandanna Dee from the Kirby series. Bandanna Dee made his first appearance in 1996 in the game “Kirby Super Star” for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. However, recently he became popular in “Kirby’s Return to Dream Land” in 2011, as he was playable and forever cemented as Kirby’s “player four”.
“I think [Bandanna Dee] will be high tier in the competitive scene,” said junior Jaden Huffman.
At #2 is Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow made his first appearance in 2001 in the game “Sonic Adventure 2” on the SEGA Dreamcast. Shadow is the evil counterpart to Sonic, who is already in the game. With Smash Ultimate’s ongoing theme of heroes vs villains fresh in fans minds, it is only natural that the blue blur should get his rival too.
“I’ve been playing sonic for a long time and I really like Shadow,” said junior Ethan Kaiser.
At #1 is Skull Kid from The Legend of Zelda. Skull kid made his first appearance in 2000 in the game The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask on the Nintendo 64. Skull kid is another antagonist and is from a series, which is already underrepresented as it is with only six characters. Another reason for his popularity is that there are little magic using characters in smash and Skull kid would fit that role.
“I like [The Legend of] Zelda and he sounds like a cool character for the game,” said junior Colin Henke.
When Super Smash Bros Ultimate is released December 7, fans will anticipate a very strong competitive scene, a possible story mode, and lots of fun with friends.
