A Dog’s Purpose, a movie that connects to the heart-wrenching death of a beloved dog, has attracted viewers, including sophomore Maddy Fleury, to the film’s trailer.

As a new year begins, film lovers are eager for new movies to strike their fancy. Although the year has just begun, 2017 promises to fulfill these expectations. 2017 may just bring the movie game up another level, given the myriad of movies scheduled to be released. Though many powerful films will be worth seeing this year, here is a preview of a few of the most anticipated movies of 2017.

Split

Release date: January 20

One of the most unique and unpredictable films of the year, Split is rumored to be a psychological thriller that will terrify viewers in a strangely satisfying and never-before seen manner.

“So many people want to see this movie because it’s not like any film ever before,” said sophomore Borna Mafie.

Three teenage girls, Claire, Marcia, and Casey (played by Haley Lu Richardson, Jessica Sula, and Anya Taylor-Joy, respectively) are coming home from a birthday party when they are suddenly abducted by a mysterious man named Kevin (played by James McAvoy). Kevin is diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder, meaning he possesses multiple personalities, or, in this case,  23 various personalities. The full impact of his disorder will come into play later in the film. The highly intense film will follow the three girls’ struggle to grow familiar with their mysterious captor and escape the situation.

A Dog’s Purpose

Release date: January 27

One of the worst moments in life can be when a precious, beloved family pet passes away. Though it is the natural cycle of life, heartbreak at the death of a pet is a universal feeling. A Dog’s Purpose tells the story of Maggie, a beloved Golden Retriever, and his life with his owner, Ethan (played by K.J. Apa), up until his unfortunate death. After Maggie’s saddening death, he is suddenly alive again, but as a different dog. As the uplifting film continues, Maggie becomes reincarnated into several new dogs. As Maggie quickly learns, each life comes with a new purpose. What really grabs the viewer’s attention in the trailer, is that the audience sees a short clip of a possible reunion between Maggie and his owner long after his death. A sad but hopeful production, this is a film which should not be missed.

“The film tells a different perspective that most people don’t think about often which makes it unique,” said freshman Dylan Blackmer.

Beauty and the Beast

Release date: March 17

A remake of the original 1991 Disney animated film, Beauty and the Beast already has viewers of all ages swooning over the new production. The classic story tells the tale of a beautiful, young woman named Belle (played by Emma Watson). Belle falls in love with the Beast (played by Dan Stevens), a horrifying monster who was once a selfish but handsome prince named Adam.

“The actress who plays the protagonist, Emma Watson, is an inspiring role model for young women across the world,” said junior Aella Reyes. “Her character, Belle, mirrors her independent personality in real life.”

The movie dives into the the Beast’s inner battle as his long-standing isolation and anger fight against his growing love for Belle. The film has shown viewers bits and pieces of a beautiful display which will soon come together to amaze audiences around the world.

The Belko Experiment

Release date: March 17

Since the trailer for The Belko Experiment was released to the public, people from all over the world have been raving about the powerful prospects of the film. The Belko Experiment is a modern horror movie modeled after the popular and successful production, The Hunger Games. This film, however, contains a new twist; the movie takes place in a modern-day office. To be more specific, the office is the American Belko Company, located in Bogotá, Colombia. A day that starts off as normal as any other takes a frightening turn as 79 employees suddenly become trapped from the outside world. It is unknown to the employees who is responsible for creating their new prison. In order to stay alive, the mysterious outside force commands them to kill each other. The story switches viewpoints through many of the employees, such as Roberto Jerez and Leandra Jerez (played by David Del Rio and Adria Arjona), and focuses on the human mind during situations wherein characters are pitted against one another.

“The movie correlates to the selfishness of human minds in real life which makes it intriguing to watch,” said senior Akash Divecha.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Release date: October 6

The sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service, this new movie may just exceed the excitement and wonder viewers experienced with the first production. The film jumps right into the action as the main character, Eggsy (played by Taron Egerton) represents the Kingsman organization- a group devoted to saving the human race. In this heart-racing film, the audience will see Eggsy travel around the United States to the Kingsman Organization’s counterpart: Statesman. A mission was assigned in the hopes of saving both organizations from a criminal mastermind- Poppy (played by Julianne Moore). This film is highly anticipated as fans hope it will surpass the first film, Kingsman: The Secret Service.

“The first movie was so unexpected and amazing that people have been waiting for a sequel after it for a long time, which is why people want to see it so badly,” said junior James Muenzenberger.

Though it is only the beginning of the year, 2017 is already looking fantastic for the film industry. Grab a bag of popcorn and get ready for a lively year full of entertaining and wonderful movies coming up.
